Lower Essex Street, Birmingham

Client: Galliard and Apsley JV | Value: £28 million | Completion: Early 2026

Kilhan Construction is currently delivering the Groundworks and RC Frame package for the landmark Lower Essex Street development in central Birmingham. This mixed-use, residential-led scheme will comprise 627 apartments and approximately 20,000 sq ft of commercial space. The plans designed with community and connectivity in mind include a clubhouse, roof garden, two internal courtyards, and a new pedestrian link between Hurst Street and Lower Essex Street.

The construction involves three reinforced concrete tower blocks ranging from 8 to 27 storeys above a large landscaped podium deck. Kilhan’s scope also includes the installation and management of three tower cranes. One of these, serving the 27-storey structure, is the tallest free-standing tower crane currently operating in the UK.

A key engineering milestone was achieved with the successful pour of the 1,800m³ raft slab for the tallest block —all completed in a single day. The core of the tower is being constructed using a slipform system, enabling efficient and continuous vertical progress on site. This complex and ambitious scheme showcases Kilhan’s capability to deliver high-rise structures with precision and scale.
